![]() Movie, it seemed to me that a lot of people discussing in the movie did not have a lot of respect for Martinet as a voice actor and called his ability to perform roles outside of specific niches into question. When Martinet was not used in The Super Mario Bros. Not that there aren't a lot of people who love Charles Martinet, but I feel like a lot of the discussions I've seen recently with Martinet don't have that same universal positivity I was seeing in reactions to Akira Kamiya. Also bear in mind that there was other content being announced, including a license that was new to this game series, but Raideen seemed to be getting similar attention. Not that I was taking a survey or anything, but a lot of the comments I saw online were praising about Akira Kamiya, so the idea that this was specifically a return of the voice actor seemed to had spread. The rights for the Raideen licence have to be negotiated, the ongoing story needs to have Raideen not only introduced but as a continual presence going forward from here, there are new animations made for not only Raideen itself but for enemies it fights, things of that nature. I'm not sure if there were totally new voices or if they were using a voice bank, but it's not just the voices that are added to the game here. The whole idea of Raideen being added to the game for the sake of Akira Kamiya's struck me as a lot of investment to be made on the basis of a voice actor. Naturally these two events featuring voice actors in games that I feel a lot of attachment to led me to compare them in my mind. Just two days later on August 21st, Nintendo announced that Charles Martinet was being replaced as the voice of Mario. The one that was revealed first and seemed to be most prominent was the return of Brave Raideen after several years, and I believe it was stated in the discussion that played later in the presentation that the major motivation for including bringing back Raideen was to again feature Akira Kamiya, the voice actor for the anime's protagonist. During this presentation, it revealed a few additional anime which would be featured in the main story. ![]() The game itself isn't that important here, but the key point is that it's a game that features content from various anime licenses. I regularly play the gacha game Super Robot Wars DD, and so I was watching its anniversary stream on August 19th. The reason I thought to post this thread is that I observed a few things which I thought may be interesting enough to share and which may not be visible unless you're in the same specific nerd spaces I tend to find myself in, but I also don't feel that I have any particular conclusions to draw from them. I imagine most of us on Era would support workers - or else just be too afraid to admit that they don't - but I think it's a broad enough topic that there may be a lot to talk about anyway. The long-standing dominance of voice actors like Nolan North and Troy Baker The replacement of Charles Martinet as the voice actor for Mario, possibly one of the more iconic video game voice acting roles, and his new role as Mario Ambassador ![]() The use of celebrity voice actors in movies such as The Super Mario Bros. The growing popularity of AI voice generation and its threat to voice acting jobs The SAG-AFTRA strike eyeing the video game industry Some of the things that come to mind are: Or, for fans of voice acting, maybe there are just particular professionals you enjoy that you'd like to spotlight. Whether that's your thoughts on where things are going and where you're like to see them go, or just telling us what level of interest you have. There are a lot of things going on in the video game voice acting world, so I think it would be a good time to just take an overview of what people think of the industry right now. "Open discussion" here meaning without a specific discussion question.
